Colleen Dunn Bates is the author of several books, including Storybook Travels: From Eloise’s New York to Harry Potter’s London, Visits to 30 of the Best-Loved Landmarks in Children’s Literature (Three Rivers Press, 2002) and The Unofficial Guide to California With Kids (John Wiley, 2004). Her newest book, Mammoth from the Inside: The Honest Guide to Mammoth & the Eastern Sierra (Prospect Park Publishing, 2004), celebrates California’s spectacular Eastern Sierra. Colleen leads readers to the region’s very best: ski and snowboard mountains, hiking trails, restaurants, fishing streams, campgrounds, condos, hot springs, historic sights, mountain-bike trails, spas, happy hours, lakefront cabins, summer festivals, ski instructors, climbing walls, backcountry guides and much more.
An avid skier, hiker and all-around outdoorswoman, Colleen has been a Mammoth regular since her first high-school ski trip in 1973. She lives in Pasadena with her husband, Darryl Bates, and their two skiing daughters, Erin and Emily. Whenever she gets a chance, she's skiing, hiking, camping and enjoying the Sierra life.
